Step by step

  1. Management first: crate/pen/supervised room, leash tether ('umbilical') when loose; strict supervision for at least 4-6 weeks.9 5,6,8,9,10
  2. Anticipate: take the puppy out first thing, after meals, naps, play, crate time; use a log; frequency can be every 10-60 minutes for young puppies, every 1-2 h while awake.6,10 1,6,9,10
  3. Same door, same spot; wait up to ~3-5 minutes (Garrett: 3 minutes; 5 minutes); if nothing, return inside, supervise/crate, and retry in 10-15 minutes.9 1,9,10
  4. Reward immediately after elimination outdoors with a special, small high-value treat (3-5 treats) and quiet praise; add a cue as elimination starts. 1,3,6,10
  5. If caught indoors: calmly interrupt and take outside; never punish or rub the nose; clean with enzymatic cleaner. 7,9,10
  6. Expand freedom room by room as accident-free time grows; free water access. 5,9

When to move to the next step

  • Reduce supervision only after weeks accident-free (4-6 weeks minimum)9

Difficulty by age

Difficulty is on a 1-5 scale, estimated for 50 breed and mixed-breed size profiles. Breed adjustments are generalisations capped at ±1 level, because breed explains only about 9% of behavioural variation; your individual dog matters more.11

  • Adolescent: Older puppies not trained: restart management.12
  • Adult: Adult dogs same; new accidents -> vet check (generalization: UTI etc.).
  • Senior: New accidents -> vet first.

Common mistakes

  • Taking dog out but giving treat later10
