Step by step
- Start with a game the dog wants to play: tug with a toy that gives your hands distance; check toys; no sticks. 4,5
- Teach 'let go' first by trading a low-value toy for a better treat/toy: place treat at nose, mark drop, then add cue ('drop it'/'out'); later the cue before the treat appears. 3,4,6
- Add very short throws (distance later); mark/reward chase, pick-up, turning, and return; let the dog catch the toy at first. 1,4,5
- Puppy: throw three to five times to teach the concept, then end; retrieve-to-hand can be taught with food as the reward for returning. 1,2
- Never chase or wrestle the item from the dog; chasing teaches 'keep away' and can raise swallowing risk. 3,4,6
- Vary toys; end the game while the dog still wants more. 4,5
When to move to the next step
- Dog returns in a straight line and lets go promptly4
Difficulty by age
Difficulty is on a 1-5 scale, estimated for 50 breed and mixed-breed size profiles. Breed adjustments are generalisations capped at ±1 level, because breed explains only about 9% of behavioural variation; your individual dog matters more.7
