Step by step

  1. Start with easy, high-value searches: let the dog see the treat hidden, one cue ('find it'), reward every find. 2,3,4
  2. Pair odour with reward (formal): feed at the source of the odour; switch hands/containers so the dog does not use memory; move on when the dog finds it within a few seconds three times in a row. 3
  3. Progress to boxes, harder hides, new rooms/locations, one change at a time; AKC uses birch for Novice; K9 Nose Work uses 5-6 sturdy boxes. 1,3,4
  4. Keep sessions short: 3-4 searches, up to 5 minutes each, with breaks; stop before frustration. 4
  5. Open to dogs of all ages/mobility: low-impact enrichment for seniors, anxious dogs or crate-rest. 1,4
