Step by step

  1. Equipment: well-fitting harness the dog cannot back out of; no leash corrections.7,8 7,8
  2. Pre-walk games indoors: stand still; mark and treat any slack leash/eye contact; place treats at your left foot (click three times for looking at you on a loose leash).2 2,7,8
  3. Walk-away game: turn and walk, mark when dog catches up beside you, deliver at your side/behind; never feed when dog is in front.2 2,3
  4. Mark+treat nearly every step at first, then thin randomly; lure with treats at nose, one treat every 2-3 s.8,9 8,9
  5. Add a cue ('let's go') once it works, and a turn cue when changing direction. 7,8,9
  6. If the lead tightens: stop and wait for slack or turn and go the other way; don't take another step while pulling because moving rewards pulling.3,8 3,4,5,8
  7. Practise first at home/front of house, then quiet streets; walk = reward: build routine so the leash and door are part of reinforcement (Dunbar); allow sniffing/decompression as a reinforcer. 1,3,6
  8. Group class can refine timing and gradual distractions. 8

When to move to the next step

  • Reduce reward rate gradually and unpredictably; do not thin too fast9
  • Go back to easier level if dog fails11

Difficulty by age

Difficulty is on a 1-5 scale, estimated for 50 breed and mixed-breed size profiles. Breed adjustments are generalisations capped at ±1 level, because breed explains only about 9% of behavioural variation; your individual dog matters more.10

What changes at this age

  • Puppy: Start at home before first walk; short.7
  • Adolescent: Strength + arousal increase difficulty.
  • Adult: Same.
  • Senior: Shorter, flatter; arthritis consideration.

Common mistakes

  • Letting pulling succeed5,12
  • Overwhelming the dog with too many distractions at once13
  • Over-reliance on short tight leads which increases frustration12
  • Turning home right after the dog toilets1

Troubleshooting

  • Strong pullers: practise in low-distraction spots14
  • Dog ignores marker: re-condition marker with small steps15

Where the sources disagree

Support is the share of the weighted sources that took a stance on the question.

Response to pulling

  • stop and wait: 40% support 4,8
  • turn and go other way: 45% support · Used in our plans 2,3
  • reward position only, no consequence: 38% support 2,9

All non-aversive; offer turn-away and stand-still, always paired with reward for slack.

Treat position

  • at left foot/side: 68% support · Used in our plans 2,9
  • in mouth by lure: 32% support 8

Side/behind placement is preferred by KP.

Insist on heel

  • no (loose lead, free sniffing): 100% support · Used in our plans 6,9

No source I read insists on a formal heel for companion dogs.

Known gaps in the evidence

  • Front-clip harness advantage not verified in read text
  • No peer-reviewed trials
